O Holy Night: The Season of Advent

Perhaps, it was a cold evening in town. Extra layers, head coverings, yearning for the fire...everyone headed inside for the night. That’s when you see an out of town family wandering in the streets seeking shelter. Imagine you are a local townsperson witnessing this moment unfold. Out of curiosity, you watch and follow as this family is escorted to the only available shelter. It’s not much, but it will have to do because there are so many visitors in town for the required census and the woman is in labor. As you watch the evening unfold, how might you react if you knew the baby being born was the Savior of the World? How would you feel if you knew the baby screaming was God in the flesh? In this season of Advent, we will consider an interpretation of that glorious moment through the ancient hymn, O Holy Night, and the opening narrative in the gospel of Luke.
